Key Facts

  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of viruses of which there are 200 known types. They are not a cause of concern for most people, but infection with certain high-risk types is common and can cause genital warts or cancer.

  • In 90% of people, the body can control the infection on its own. Persistent high-risk HPV infection is the cause of cervical cancer and is associated with vulvar, vaginal, mouth/throat, penile, and anal cancers(1).

  • In 2019, HPV caused an estimated 620,000 cancers in women and 70,000 cancers in men(1).

  • Preventive HPV vaccination can prevent these cancers. In addition, HPV screening and treatment of precancerous lesions are effective ways to prevent cervical cancer.

The Global Dangers of HPV

  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections worldwide, and nearly all sexually active people will be exposed to HPV at some point in their lives.

  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the highest prevalence of cervical HPV in women is in sub-Saharan Africa (24%), followed by Latin America and the Caribbean (16%), Eastern Europe (14%), and Southeast Asia (14%) (2). Prevalence in men varies widely by sexual orientation.

  • In 2019, an estimated 620,000 new cases of cancer in women and 70,000 new cases of cancer in men were caused by HPV worldwide (1).

  • In 2022, cervical cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer and cancer death in women, with approximately 660,000 new cases and 350,000 deaths worldwide (3). Cervical cancer accounts for more than 90% of HPV-related cancers in women (1).

  • More than 500 million people worldwide are infected with HPV, and 90% of these infections are naturally cleared by the human immune system within two years. However, some high-risk HPV infections can lead to serious health problems, including cervical cancer, anal cancer, oropharyngeal cancer, etc.

Symptoms

  • Most people who get HPV don't have any symptoms. The immune system usually clears HPV from the body within a year or two without any lasting effects.

  • Some HPV infections can cause small, rough bumps (genital warts) on the vagina, penis, or anus, or less often in the throat. These bumps may be painful, itchy, or bleed, or cause swollen glands.

  • HPV infections that don't go away on their own can cause changes in the cells of the cervix that can lead to precancerous changes, which can develop into cervical cancer if not treated. It usually takes 15-20 years for an HPV infection to develop into cervical cancer.

  • Most early changes in cervical cells and precancerous changes don't cause symptoms. Symptoms of cervical cancer may include bleeding between periods or after sex or a foul-smelling vaginal discharge. These symptoms may be caused by other conditions. People with these symptoms should talk to their healthcare provider.

Prevention

  • Vaccination is the best way to prevent HPV infection, cervical cancer, and other HPV-related cancers.

  • Screening can detect precancerous changes in the cervix and treat them before they develop into cancer.

All girls ages 9-14 should get the HPV vaccine before they become sexually active.

Testing for HPV in cells from a woman's cervix can be used to screen women for cervical cancer. Women should be screened every 5-10 years starting at age 30. Women with HIV should be screened every 3 years starting at age 25.

After a positive HPV test (or other screening test), a healthcare provider can check for changes or precancerous changes in the cervix that can develop into cervical cancer if not treated. Treating precancerous changes can prevent cervical cancer. Precancerous changes rarely cause symptoms, so it's important to get regular screenings to check the health of your cervix.

Importance of HPV Screening

Currently, cervical cancer is the only HPV-caused cancer that is detectable by screening. Screening tests are used to check for the disease when there are no symptoms. The goal of cervical cancer screening is to find precancerous cell changes before they develop into cancer and to find them when treatment can prevent cancer from developing. Cervical cancer screening is an important part of routine health care for people with a cervix. This includes women who still have a cervix and transgender men.

Cervical cancer is the most common type of cancer caused by HPV, and other less common cancers also affect both men and women, including anal cancer, vulvar cancer, vaginal cancer, oral/throat cancer, and penile cancer.

Bioteke's HPV Screening&Test Solution

As a comprehensive and innovative IVD company, Bioteke is committed to helping address the global epidemic of HPV through innovative diagnostic products.

Bioteke has launched two key HPV testing products, namely the Urine HPV Test Kit and the Human Papillomavirus(HPV) Genotyping Detection Kit(Fluorescence PCR Method), providing efficient and accurate testing tools for global medical institutions.

  • Urine HPV Test Kit: This product uses immunochromatographic technology to quickly detect HPV infection within 15 minutes. Its convenient operation and rapid results make it an ideal choice for preliminary screening, especially for primary medical units or individuals to quickly determine the infection status.

  • Human Papillomavirus(HPV) Genotyping Detection Kit: For situations that require accurate diagnosis, Bioteke's HPV Genotyping Test Kit uses advanced fluorescent PCR technology to detect and distinguish a variety of high-risk and low-risk HPV viruses. This product provides medical institutions with detailed virus typing information, helps to detect malignant lesions such as cervical cancer at an early stage, and provides an important basis for clinical decision-making.

A Global Vision for Cervical Cancer Elimination

Vaccinations, screening programs and early detection worldwide are driving significant declines in cervical cancer incidence.

The World Health Organization has set the goal of eliminating cervical cancer as a public health problem by 2030. The realization of this vision relies on the global promotion of vaccines, screening and diagnostic tools.

Bioteke is committed to helping achieve this goal through its innovative HPV testing kits. Our products not only help medical institutions and public health institutions respond to the global epidemic of HPV, but also provide patients with opportunities for early diagnosis and treatment.
