Major “Enemies” That Endanger Intestinal Health: Rotavirus, Norovirus and Adenovirus

What you need to know

  • Rotavirus is a common cause of diarrhoea in babies and children before the age of 5 years. In some cases the infection may be mild, causing loose stools for a short time, but typically rotavirus starts abruptly with fever and vomiting followed by watery diarrhoea that may lead to dehydration. No specific antiviral therapy is currently available against rotavirus. Rotavirus is not the only cause of diarrhoea, but it is one of the most common and serious.

There are eight types of rotavirus, numbered in English letters as A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H. Among them, type A is the most common type, causing more than 90% of human rotavirus infections.

  • Norovirus, also known as Norwalk Viruses (NV), is the prototype representative strain of the Norovirus (NV) genus in the Human Calicivirus (HuCV) family. Norovirus is one of the main pathogens causing non-bacterial acute gastroenteritis. Its genetic variation is fast. In the same period and in the same community, strains with different genetic characteristics may be prevalent, and they are prone to repeated infections.

Norovirus is the main cause of non-bacterial diarrhea outbreaks. It is prevalent worldwide and can be infected throughout the year. The infected targets are mainly adults and school-age children, and the incidence is high in cold seasons. Everyone is generally susceptible.

  • Adenovirus is a non-enveloped double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Adenoviridae family. It has many different clinical manifestations. Sometimes the clinical symptoms are unique and can be clearly diagnosed. However, in most cases, the symptoms caused by adenovirus are difficult to distinguish from those caused by other pathogens.

The main types of intestinal infections are 40 and 41, but there are also cases of diarrhea caused by other types of adenovirus such as HAdV-3 and 7.

Differences between Group A Rotavirus, Norovirus, and Enteric Adenovirus

Features
Group A Rotavirus Norovirus Enteric Adenovirus
Main infected groups Older children and adults All populations, mainly children and adults Children and immunocompromised people
Mode of transmission Fecal-oral transmission, contamination of water and food Fecal-oral transmission, aerosols, and contaminated food Fecal-oral transmission, direct contact transmission
Main seasons Autumn and Winter Popular all year round, especially in autumn and winter Popular all year round
Main symptoms Watery diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and dehydration, along with fever Nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, and diarrhea High fever, cough, diarrhea, red eyes
Duration 3-8 days 1-3 days 7-12 days
Precautions Food hygiene, vaccination Pay attention to food safety and personal hygiene Food hygiene, air purification

Group A rotaviruses mainly threaten infants and young children, causing severe dehydrating diarrhea.

Noroviruses spread quickly and are highly explosive, and are a common cause of acute gastroenteritis in adults and children.

Intestinal adenovirus infections last for a long time and are common in children, but the symptoms are relatively mild.

How to quickly identify and diagnose viruses?

If adults or children have persistent vomiting, diarrhea and other symptoms, they can try using the Bioteke Group A Rotavirus/Adenovirus/Norovirus Antigen Rapid Test Kit for auxiliary diagnosis.

Bioteke's Group A Rotavirus/Adenovirus/Norovirus Antigen Rapid Test Kit can simultaneously detect 3 types of enterovirus infections: group A rotavirus, norovirus and adenovirus, helping to detect viral infections in a timely manner, reduce the possibility of infection, and assist in diagnosis and treatment.
